About Gramodaya Sangh, Bhadravati
Gramodaya Sangh, Bhadravati, District Chandrapur, Maharashtra, is a pioneering NGO dedicated to rural upliftment and artisan empowerment through the preservation and development of India’s traditional pottery crafts. Established in 1955, Gramodaya Sangh has been working continuously to improve the social, economic, and cultural well-being of rural communities.
Founded as a registered public trust, Gramodaya Sangh was envisioned as a platform to strengthen village-based livelihoods by reviving traditional skills and promoting self-reliance. The institution was laid during the peak of the Bhoodan Movement by Late Shri S. K. Mirmira, recipient of the prestigious Jamnalal Bajaj Award for Rural Technology, on 3rd September 1955.
Located in Bhadravati, just 25 km from Chandrapur city on the Chandrapur–Nagpur highway, Gramodaya Sangh has evolved into a respected rural development NGO known for its grassroots impact.
Role of Gramodaya Sangh in Rural Upliftment
Beyond pottery development, Gramodaya Sangh has played a crucial role in holistic rural upliftment by introducing:
-
Bio-gas initiatives for sustainable energy
-
Rural sanitation and smokeless chulha programs
-
Education and awareness programs for women and children
These initiatives have significantly improved living standards while promoting environmentally responsible practices in villages.
Empowering Artisans Through Pottery
At the core of Gramodaya Sangh’s work is its commitment to artisan upliftment. The NGO supports a pottery cluster of 594 rural artisans, many of whom depend entirely on pottery for their livelihood. Through structured training, design innovation, and collective marketing platforms, artisans are empowered to reach national and international markets.
The artisans create a wide range of handcrafted pottery products, including:
-
Idols and decorative showpieces
-
Jars, cups, plates, and bowls
-
Flower pots and kitchenware
-
Value-added terracotta and ceramic products
Each product reflects India’s rich pottery heritage while providing sustainable income to rural families.
